8th grade resource room with a side of technology please.....

This is the first year that I have not had multiple grade levels within the resource room, it is also the first year that I am teaching a technology based class. To put it mildly it has been interesting.

The resource room is a place I feel very comfortable. I have known the kids since they were in 6th grade. They know what makes me tick and I know what makes them tick. I decided early on that in reading we would be reading short stories. Most of the kids are reading between a 5th and 7th grade reading level. I wanted to broaden their horizons. In September we read and analyzed Shirley Jackson. Leading us to compare and contrast written work to a YouTube video of "The Lottery".  We spent the month of October reading Poe and they LOVED it. The make their own "Stanton" Academy videos in math where they can review themselves working through problems. One of the kids said they it make studying a little more fun.

In late 2012, it was decided that we were going to one to one. Elementary and middle school with iPads and the high school with laptops. I hit the ground running with my teacher iPad and was able to borrow a small set to use in the resource room. Kids that don't like to speak aloud finally found a voice. Fast forward to this school year. Our technology coaches rolled out about 1200 iPads and I rolled out a new iPad class for 6th graders. No curriculum, no guidelines, no idea what I was going to do. We are about halfway through the year and it has been interesting to say the least.

The First Group...
The first session my airserver did not work. I was teaching the kids how to do something by holding up my iPad. I had different apps on my device than the kids had, and I was still learning some of the apps. There were days I was walking to class and finding out nothing was working. I HATED teaching the class, I cried and wished for 2 hour delays. But we muddled through...

Something new for the New Year

I decided I wanted to do something different for 2014, so I decided to start a blog. I wanted it to be a reflection of my classroom and what is working. Too often we hear the negatives of education, but not the amazing things that are being accomplished. So here we go.
